DARASET® HES

Set-accelerating admixture ASTM C494 Type C

Product Description

DARASET® HES is non-corrosive, non-chloride admixture for concrete. It accelerates cement hydration, resulting in increased early compressive and flexural strengths, without significantly impacting concrete workability.

Daraset HES does not contain calcium chloride and is completely non-corrosive to reinforcing steel, metal decks, and all metal components of admixture storage and dispensing systems. It is formulated to meet the requirements of ASTM C494 Type C and can be used at any dosage to comply with ACI 318 guidelines for chloride content of concrete. Daraset HES is supplied as a ready to use liquid that weighs approximately 10.4 lbs/gal (1.25 kg/L).

Uses

Daraset HES may be used whenever it is desirable to increase the early compressive and flexural strengths of concrete. When used in the manufacture of precast concrete, Daraset HES speeds the concrete’s strength development allowing for earlier form removal and more efficient production.

In concrete mixes designed with fly ash or slag, Daraset HES helps offset the effect of slow early strength gain and accelerates form removal, thus reducing concrete construction costs.

Performance

In concrete mixtures, Daraset HES accelerates the chemical reaction between Portland cement and water. It speeds up the formation of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gel—the binder that bonds concrete aggregates together. Accelerated gel formation in turn shortens the setting time of concrete and contributes to the development of higher early strengths, thus compensating for the set and strength development effects of cooler weather and pozzolans.

Product Advantages

  • Provides higher early strengths without adversely affecting concrete workability.
  • Reduces/eliminates cost of heat curing
  • Replace/reduce cement without sacrificing strength
  • Increased production rates through faster utilization of formwork
  • Consistent set times with increasing dosages

Addition Rates

The amount of Daraset HES required will depend on specific job conditions, local materials, and the degree of early strength development required. Addition rates for Daraset HES can vary with the type of application, but will normally range from 8 to 30 fl oz/100 lbs (520 to 1960 mL/100 kg) of cement. Should conditions require using more than the recommended addition rate, please consult your GCP representative.

Alkali Contribution to Concrete

Daraset HES contributes 0.51 lbs (0.06 kg) of alkali, as Na2O equivalent, per gallon (L) of admixture. This contribution may need to be considered whenever alkali-reactive aggregates are used.

Compatibility with Other Admixtures and Batch Sequencing

Daraset HES is compatible with most GCP admixtures as long as they are added separately to the concrete mix, usually through the water holding tank discharge line. In general, it is recommended that Daraset HES be added to the concrete mix near the end of the batch sequence for optimum performance. Different sequencing may be used if local testing shows better performance. Please see GCP Technical Bulletin TB-0110, Admixture Dispenser Discharge Line Location and Sequencing for Concrete Batching Operations for further recommendations. Daraset HES should not come into contact with any other admixture before or during batching, even if diluted in mix water.

Pre-testing of the concrete mix should be performed before use, as conditions and materials change in order to assure compatibility with other admixtures, and to optimize dosage rates, addition times in the batch sequencing, and concrete performance.

For concrete that requires air entrainment, the use of an ASTM C260 air-entraining agent,(such as Daravair® or Darex® product lines) is recommended to provide suitable air void parameters for freeze-thaw resistance. Please consult your GCP representative for guidance.

Mix Water Adjustment

Since Daraset HES may be used at high dosages, the water contained in the product should be accounted for. Each gallon of Daraset HES added to a concrete mix will contribute 6.5 lbs (each liter will contribute 0.78 kg) of water to that mix.

Packaging & Handling

Daraset HES is available in bulk, delivered by metered trucks, or in totes and drums.

Daraset HES will freeze at approximately -10 °F (-23 °C) but will return to full functionality after thawing and thorough mechanical agitation.
